About SHIP

SHIP is an Open Innovation Platform that sees innovation opportunities in tackling the SDGs and aims to solve worldwide challenges with corporate know-how and technologies.

SHIP is a global platform that includes diverse stakeholders both in Japan and overseas. It collects first-hand insights from the ground about issues around the world by utilizing its unique digital platform.

SHIP offers Japanese companies a variety of membership options and programs, including the use of the platform data, suited to the needs of employees at all staff levels – from entry-level to executive management.

The programs’ emphasis is on the three core elements of the business creation stage – usually the bottleneck in the innovation process of Japanese companies: "problem finding", "value conceptualization" and "business model design".

SHIP is jointly run by Japan Innovation Network (JIN) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and supported by a network of partners.

SHIP Digital Platform

The SHIP Digital Platform connects issues and needs with relevant technologies and know-how.

The ignition point of innovation is correctly identifying the customer's hidden needs. Key to identifying these needs is access to human-centered information. The SHIP digital platform is an online platform specifically designed to collect this ‘raw information’ on people’s challenges around the world.

The accumulated data will be enriched with macro-information and organized into different categories and innovation opportunities. These will be shared with the member companies to support the search for the solutions and utilized in the SHIP programs.

  • Globe-Spanning Data Collection

    The SHIP digital platform will
    continuously collect and compile
    'real voices on the ground'
    information from SHIP partners
    worldwide. The contributors are
    experts, start-ups, NGOs/NPOs,
    and international students from
    all around the globe.

  • Finding Insights from
    “Real Voice”

SHIP administrators propose hypotheses of potential customers’ Jobs To Be Done or business opportunities based on the analysis of raw data posted by the “real voices on the ground”.

  • Sharing Information with SHIP Corporate Members

This information is shared with the SHIP corporate members and utilized in the SHIP programs in order to create solutions and business models.

Japan Innovation Network (JIN) is an accelerator for large and medium-sized companies to spur innovation in companies and overcome the widely held belief that “large companies cannot be innovative”.
JIN aims to create 100 innovative companies in Japan and turn Japan into an “Innovation Nation” through “two-layered management”, the systematic approach to manage creativity and productivity in parallel.
